Debian based distibutions without systemd running testing

Beware:

If you have been running testing while Stretch (9) was stable you were indirectly following Debian Buster (10).  Since debian 10 Buster became stable today July 7th, those using testing instead of Buster repositories will be automatically jumping to the next release, called Bullseye (Debian 11).  The official Devuan repositories automatically “merge” debian and devuan packages, so testing will remain Buster till Devuan releases 3 (Beowulf) and therefore testing will become Devuan Chimaera.  If manually you have added Debian testing be careful of incompatibilities.  (some people do this, will swap Devuan merged for Devuan/devuan, and add a debian repository directly). New systemd-less build on Devuan and Poppy

by DevuanDog:

A new distro without systemd has reached alpha stage : Devuandog
Here is a post about it : https://debiandog.github.io/MakeLive/Readme-build-devuandog-beowulf.html

What does developer have to say about systemd?

I chose for Devuan as a base (instead of Debian) because AFAIK the new expected Debian ‘stable’ (buster) doesn’t give the choice anymore to boot without systemd (http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=115124). Continue reading

We are a systemd free linux community

Edited again: 2018-11-15

As the previous site started out (08/2017) of the temporary need for Artix users to meet and exchange experiences, share solutions to problems, now that Artix has its official site, we have decided to move in the direction the site had already taken anyway.  Freedom and equality of access and exchange of information.

Antix is to Debian what Obarun is to Arch, and Devuan is to debian what Artix is to arch.  Such projects/distributions seem to be very promising in concept and execution.  Equally promising, if not more, is Void and Adélie linux taking an independent path.  Unfortunately we can not cover the progress of too many distros and at times we may have to drop a few from the list and concentrate on the few we believe there is future and hope.  We have dropped Devuan over a year ago due to serious doubts with the project’s management, and now we have decided Artix has to go too. The Great Devuan Mystery– Finally Solved?

by FigOSdev

Silly title is silly– I have a serious point to make, though I’m not obligated to be serious about every jot and tittle. Once upon a time, the free software movement had a sense of humour.

Dissatisfaction breeds theories as to what is really wrong; and while I have entertained (and continue to entertain) whatever people tell me may or may not be wrong with Devuan, I also entertain (and even lean towards) the possibility that it is entirely legitimate. Continue reading

What is a distro – anyway?

After some puzzling evidence in trying to revise a list of non-systemd init distributions, forks, clones, derivatives, and “retouches” in which FigOS didn’t seem to be easily admitted, and in our quest to come up with explicit guidelines of what is what on the list, and….. since we are not developers and/or distro publishers ourselves, we decided to get some guidance of someone who has published a complete operating system himself what he thinks.  Let’s see what he has to say about it.

What is a Distro? (by FigOSdev)

Defining a distro in a technical way is probably useful, if it can be done accurately. For non-technical people, I explain that a distro is:
“Like the’ make and model’ of a car– except that it can replace all the software on your computer.”

My own experience with devuan (by codeinfig)

“i disapprove of your text editor, but i will defend to the death your right to use it.” — voltaire

Critics and fans should be able to agree that devuan is an effort built on grandiose claims. the reason is simple: the claims made are grandiose. if devuan wanted to deny that, all that had to do is make more modest claims.

If you make grandiose claims, you are also going to create critics who love to point out how you fall short. you might just be ambitious enough to live up to them even partway– and in my opinion, devuan is not made entirely of claims. so far, it delivers. Continue reading
